Optimising Your LinkedIn

Profile photo: Use a recent photo of just you. Make sure it’s not zoomed out and that it is high resolution. Suggestion – don't use your graduation photo.  

 

Background image: Extra space to showcase you and your identity. Could use your department logo, company logo, stock image showcasing your area of research. 

 

URL: Create a shortened URL, it looks better and makes it easier for people to find you (Settings > Edit public profile > customise public URL). Suggestion – Make your profile public. 

 

Headline: Super short description of you and your experience. Suggestion - make it different to your job title! 

 

Summary: Think of it as your elevator pitch. Personal background with 3 selling points. 

 

Experience details: List 3-5 bullet points of core responsibilities of each job (suggestion - look at your job description when doing this), include relevant methods or devices, include tangible results or outputs. Use action words e.g., executed, managed, accelerated, collaborated, analysed 

 

Network: Add connections! Comment/ like/ share people’s stuff! 

  • Endorsements: Ask employers/supervisors/ collaborators to endorse you, connect them to the skills section. 

  • Join groups: Specific to your areas of interest. Make sure you actively participate in the group and check them regularly (groups show up at the bottom of your profile page).
