The ability to think and write critically is crucial at PGR level. In this session we will consider what is meant by critical thinking in an academic context, nurturing analytical and evaluative skills and the role of reflexivity in this process. We will look at the distinction between ‘deep’ and ‘surface’ learning in the development of critical skills and the importance of reading widely in developing critical skills. We will also look at how critical thinking is translated into critical writing and the key requirements and aspects of the latter. The distinction between descriptive and critical writing and the role of each in academic writing will be outlined and discussed through examples and group reflection.
