This session will look at different ways to approach reading strategies for theoretical texts. We will use Judith Butler’s influential essay “Performative Acts and Gender Constitution” as our textual example and unpack techniques for identifying core arguments and paraphrasing dense ideas, even those outside our own fields. Open to all PhD students, this session is designed to sharpen your reading skills and improve your academic writing.
Aims:
To reflect on your own reading practices and how these shape your writing Identity and summarise central arguments Apply effective techniques of paraphrasing that do not replicate or oversimplify.
