If you have spent any significant time navigating the literature to inform your research, you have likely noticed the sheer volume of systematic reviews now available. Long regarded as the "gold standard" of evidence synthesis due to their rigorous and transparent methodology, systematic reviews have become increasingly prevalent. So much so, in fact, that it can be difficult for researchers and decision-makers to determine which reviews are most relevant—or how they align or diverge in their findings.
This is where umbrella reviews (also known as overviews of reviews) come into play. Umbrella reviews synthesize data from multiple systematic reviews, offering a high-level comparison of results to address broad or complex research questions. In essence, they allow researchers to critically evaluate and contextualize the existing body of reviews—offering a meta-perspective on the evidence landscape.
If you are interested in learning more about this birds-eye approach to evidence synthesis, I invite you to join me, Cath, for a peer-led learning session on umbrella reviews.
